ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS

We have now seen two plays in the NT Live season, which streams live theatre to cinemas around the world: Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and now One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean's adaptation of Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters. This is a wonderful way to see current productions at the National Theatre, for those who haven't the time, energy or spondulicks to trek up to London on top of buying theatre tickets. Given that in an ideal world, the best option would be to see the production on stage, this is a fantastic new hybrid way of seeing the show. OK, you're at a remove from the theatre, but it's more than watching a recorded play on the big screen - you're in some significant way half-way to actually being there. It was a little inhibiting being in the cinema, when possessed by hysterical mirth at the gorgeous comic antics of the One Man ensemble cast - you can let go a bit more when surrounded by other people in one big noisy crowd (South East English cinema audiences can be a little restrained) - but even so, it was SO good (as we kept saying to each other afterwards!). If you haven't yet availed yourself of this great opportunity, I do heartily recommend it. We've booked for Arnold Wesker's The Kitchen, and can't wait!

I agree the NT Live season is a great way of seeing a lot of interesting plays for a fraction of the price of getting to London (unless you live there, of course !). It's not quite as good as the real thing - how could it be? But it's always great to see good writing, direction and acting.
I think your site is really interesting and I really like the content of your blog.

I was at this performance too and highly delighted to see so many friend there afterwards; an antidote to the somewhat anodyne commentary from the people sitting behind us. I noted too that I heard people laugh but didn't see the people next to me laugh once. Perhaps I laughed enough for the whole row and I certainly hurt more than after the panto at the Old Vic a few years ago. And further delight was to find that friends in Scotland had watched the relay too. I like that coming together of so many of us. x
